Ben Sigurdson at the University of Winnipeg's Stylus magazine makes Future Fashion his "Pick of the Month." Here's what he had to say: "If the vintage synth on the cover of Future Fashion doesn’t at least give you an inkling of what Gary Flanagan’s all about, if you remain curious and are provoked to insert said disc into the nearest player, make sure there’s nothing breakable within arm’s reach. The pulsating intro of “Nightclub” may just start a toe tapping, a head nodding, but by the time the chorus (complete with human and robot call-and-response) kicks in, you will undoubtedly be thrashing madly about your surroundings. The aforementioned title, along with those such as “We Have the Dance Floor to Ourselves” and “Dancing to a Modern Beat”, pretty much spell out Gary’s mandate; to feed the masses a retro synth sandwich with a side of style, then leave them begging for seconds. This New Brunswick native may have been trapped in a time warp since 1983, but there’s still something pretty fresh and exciting about this decidedly tongue-in-cheeky man and his many machines. Hell, if Trans Am can pull off the Kraftwerk revival, there’s room for Gary Flanagan, and in this case, the cream rises to the top. He even has songs in French (remember, New Brunswick is the only officially-bilingual province)! A dozen tracks here (including two remixes, as good as the originals),
reminiscent of early Depeche Mode, the aforementioned Kraftwerk, and a
more–intense
Erasure. But I almost feel like I’m deceiving the reader by reviewing
this CD, because Gary Flanagan recorded is only half of the equation; never
have I seen one man and some technology TOTALLY FUCKING ROCK OUT like Gary
Flanagan. Dressed entirely in black, Gary left a handful of jaded campus radio
dorks picking their jaws up from the floor. He’s got a puppet, for
crying out loud! All hail Gary Flanagan." Bob Mersereau at the Telegraph Journal in St. John made Future Fashion one of his Christmas music picks, and said, "With the '80s back in so many ways, this guy's way ahead of the pack." Jason Baker at synthpop.net had this to say: "This is a great cd for those who love simple electronic pop, as
it was in the very early 80's and late 70's. Simple, yet incredibly infectious
melodies,
fused with a unique and unforgettable vocalist, leading to a album you just
have to hear. Highly Recommended! 4.5 stars." This review of Future Fashion comes from Danny King of Synthetic Vision magazine and is featured on the Electrogarden Network: "[T]his is an excellent album with some great tracks, especially the stronger and more up-tempo tracks like 'We Have The Dance Floor To Ourselves,’‘Summertime’ and ‘All We Are’ as well as the bright and bouncy opening track ‘Nightclub’. [T]he best of the four new tracks (one of which is actually an old track ‘Super-8’) is the Ganymede co-written ‘Dancing To A Modern Beat,' an excellent mid-paced track with a great combination of bass, percussion and analogue synth work while the darker ‘Super-8’ is another excellent track with some great analogue sounds. One of the more surprising tracks on the album is ‘Metro Boulot Dodo’... No doubt it will gain some interest and attention in various clubs. Both remixes are excellent and thankfully remain faithful to their original versions, unlike so many remixes in this day and age. Fr/Action add their Synth-Pop led Future-Pop to ‘Metro Boulot Dodo’ giving the track itself the expected (and slightly) harder edge seen on Fr/Action’s recent debut album Crimes of the Future while in a similar position Simulator also add their own edge to ‘Nightclub,' a darker edge with some occasional distortion on the vocals and some excellent sweeping synth riffs. Once again this musical style was recently featured on Simulator’s debut album Enter the Unknown. Is it pleasing to see Gary get the chance to ‘step up’
and release an album like Future Fashion and full praise to
Ganymede for giving both Gary that opportunity and for also adding their
own edge to the album including their production skills. For those of
you with a preference for pure Electro-Pop firmly influenced by the
early-80s, then do yourself a favour and pick up a copy of this excellent
album and continue your support for this emerging Synth Pop label." |
